The pie charts compare the proportions of hazardous waste that are disposed of using five different methods in the Republic of Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Overall, the three countries adopt markedly different approaches to hazardous waste disposal. While the Republic of Korea mainly relies on recycling, Sweden primarily uses underground disposal. By contrast, the United Kingdom disposes of the vast majority of its hazardous waste underground and is the only country that employs both chemical treatment and sea dumping.
In the Republic of Korea, recycling is by far the most common method, accounting for 69% of hazardous waste. Underground disposal represents 22%, while the remaining 9% is destroyed through incineration. Notably, no waste is treated chemically or dumped at sea.
A different pattern can be observed in Sweden, where 55% of hazardous waste is buried underground, making it the dominant disposal method. Recycling accounts for 25%, whereas incineration makes up the remaining 20%. Similar to Korea, Sweden does not use either chemical treatment or sea dumping.
The United Kingdom displays the most distinctive distribution. An overwhelming 82% of hazardous waste is disposed of underground, compared with only 2% through incineration. Unlike the other two countries, the UK also uses chemical treatment (8%) and dumping at sea (8%), while recycling is not employed at all.
