The two pie charts illustrate how adults spent their time working on six different activities in a specific country in 1959 and 2008.
Overall, working accounted for the largest proportion of time spending in both years, and its share increased considerable over the period. By contrast, going out with friends/family declined and travel to work increased.
In 1959, working represented the largest share of spending time at 33%, followed by sleeping at 32% and going out with friends/family at 19%. By 2008, the proportion spent on working had risen to 42%. In contrast, sleeping and going out with friends/family fell to 25% and 6% respectively. Thus going out with friends/ family became considerably smallest activity compared with other categories.
The proportion allocated to travel to work, other interests or playing sports and relaxing at home also changed over the fifty- year period. Spending time on travel to working increased from 2%in 1959 to 8% in 2008, making it the fourth largest activity. Meanwhile, other interests or playing sports and relaxing at home increased to 8% and 13% respectively.
