Given are two maps describing the layout of a village in the UK 25 years ago and in the present day.
Overall, it can be seen from the pictures that there has been a significant increase in residential buildings, as well as the abandonment of the majority of commercial buildings in the village.
Back in 2000, on its main road which stretches diagonally from the southwest to the northeast corner, there was a short path branching off, leading to several houses on the western side of the village. This once straight path has been extended and curved, providing suitable space for more houses along it. On the east side of the village, the large patch of agricultural land was repurposed into a dense residential area which was erected along a loop path. This rapid urbanisation suggests a stark increase in the village’s population.
Despite the impressive growth spurt in housing numbers, most of the commercial buildings in the village have fallen into disuse. At the start of the millennium, the villagers owned a restaurant and a hotel north of the main road, together with a pub and a shoe factory to its south. Right now, however, only two small shops at the far east remain in business. Behind the deserted shoe factory, and oval-shaped playground has been built, filling this previously empty land with entertainment for the local people.
