Turning to the details, Australia had 23,720 doctors in 1986, about 75% of which was males, while the proportion of female doctors was three times lower. While the number of doctors in the country increased significantly in the next twenty years, from 29060 doctors in 1996 to 35450 doctors in 2006, the figure for male doctors decreased to 60%, down from 75% in 1986. The shares of women doctors, on the other hand, saw a rise to 40%.
When it comes to origins of these doctors, the percentage of foreign doctors in Australia increased over the period, from 35% in 1986 to 50% in 2006, whereas the proportion of local doctors dropped to 50%, down from 65% in 1986.
