The table illustrates the value of kiwi fruit exports from New Zealand to five countries between 2010 and 2012.
Overall, export values to Japan, China and Russia increased during the period, while the figures for Mexico and Saudi Arabia declined overall. In addition, Japan was by far the largest market for kiwi fruit exports, whereas Saudi Arabia recorded the lowest figures.
In 2010, Japan imported kiwi fruit worth $271.1 million, which was significantly higher than the figures for China and Russia, at $74.9 million and $968,000 respectively. The value of exports to Japan then rose steadily to $287.4 million in 2011 before reaching a peak of $325.3 million in 2012. Similarly, exports to China increased gradually from $74.9 million to $94 million over the period. Russia also experienced growth, although the figures were much lower, rising from $968,000 in 2010 to $2.404 million in 2012.
By contrast, exports to Mexico and Saudi Arabia showed an overall downward trend. Mexico’s figure fell sharply from $6 million in 2010 to $2.4 million in 2011, before recovering slightly to $3.3 million in the final year. Meanwhile, the value of exports to Saudi Arabia increased from $290,000 to $407,000 in 2011, after which it dropped dramatically to just $82,000 by the end of the period.
