The table illustrates the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in Canada, Germany, and the UK in 1980 and 2000, with forecasts to 2030.
Overall, the proportions in all three countries followed an upward trend over the period. Another striking feature is that the proportion of Germany’s elderly population recorded the highest percentage throughout the timeframe.
Looking first at Germany, Germany’s elderly population accounted for 15.51% in 1980. Following this, it increased significantly to 20.35% by 2000 before being projected to reach 25.8% by 2030.
Turning to the remaining countries, the figure for Canada’s elderly people followed a similar trend to Germany, from 9.51% in 1980 to 14.61% by 2000. By 2030, this figure is predicted to surpass the UK’s proportion, at 23.39%. In contrast, the proportion of the UK decreased modestly from 14.87% in 1980 to 14.61% by 2000 before being predicted to recover and reach 19.24% by 2030.
