Overall, there was an increase in the number of people engaged in running, Aerobics, and Tennis, with the largest change can be seen in running activity. In addition, a decrease was seen in cycling and swimming activity.
The number of runners started at 1.4 million people, after which it saw a significant rise to 2.2 million people, marking an impressive 156% rise. Similar changes, but to a lesser extent, the figure for Aerobics and Tennis both increased 0.2 million people between 2001 and 2009, which increased 11% and 15% respectively.
4.5 million people participated in cycling in 2001, followed by a dramatic drop to 3.6 million people in 2009, a 20% drop, despite it being the most popular activity in 2001. The number of swimmers in 2001 was 3.7 million people, but later dropped to 3.3 in the last year of the period examined, with a 10% decrease.
