The table illustrates the number of participants of 5 different physical activities, in 4-year intervals, from 2001 to 2009 in Australia. Overall, while the count of people running and doing aerobics witnessed an upward trend, an opposite pattern was documented for cycling and swimming. Moreover, cycling was the most popular activity.
In terms of cycling and swimming, despite undergoing a significant decrease of 20%, the former maintained the leading category, starting at 4.5 and ending with 3.6 million cyclists. Likewise, the latter also experienced a moderate drop of 10%, from 3.7 to 3.3 million swimmers.
On the other hand, a slight climb of 11% was recorded in the number of people partaking in aerobics, from 1.4 to 2.2 million attendees. The level of Australian runners was 1.4 million in 2001, after which it grew significantly to 2.2 million people in 2009, marking an increase of 56%. The figure for tennis players saw a growth of 15%, gradually going up from 1 to 1.2 million people, which was the least prevalent activity throughout the period.
