The table illustrates the proportion of people participating in seven different sports in a European country in the years 1999, 2004, and 2009.
Overall, playing football was the most popular choice among people, although it experienced a gradual decline over the period, whereas yoga and golf were the least popular sports. Participation in tennis, swimming, golf, yoga, and volleyball increased gradually, while the opposite trend was seen in basketball.
In 1999, the highest figures were recorded in football (57%), after which it dropped steadily to 48% throughout the period. Meanwhile, playing basketball also decreased gradually, dipping from 26% to 24% over the decade.
By contrast, the remaining sports showed an upward trend. In 1999, 32% of people went swimming, and this was followed by moderate growth to 34%, remaining in its second position. Likewise, the percentage of playing tennis and golf climbed consistently from 25% and 8% in 1999 to 33% and 17% in 2009, respectively. Volleyball was a more moderately played sport among people; participation increased noticeably from 17% to 20% initially, but then it decreased to 18% in 2009. Despite rising from 10% to 13%, doing yoga was the least common sport in the final five years.
