The table presents the medal totals of the ten highest-ranked countries at the London 2012 Olympic Games, with the rankings based on the number of gold medals won.
Overall, the United States dominated the medal table, winning the highest numbers of both gold medals and total medals. By contrast, Hungary and Australia won the fewest gold medals among the top ten countries, while Australia nevertheless recorded a higher overall medal total than several nations ranked above it.
The United States topped the table with 104 medals, comprising 46 gold, 29 silver, and 29 bronze. China ranked second, winning 38 gold medals and 88 medals in total. Although Russia collected the second-highest overall medal tally (82 medals), it finished fourth because it won only 24 gold medals, five fewer than Great Britain, which placed third with 29 gold medals and 65 medals overall.
Among the remaining countries, South Korea ranked fifth with 13 gold medals and 28 medals in total. Germany and France each secured 11 gold medals, although Germany achieved a significantly higher overall total (44 medals) than France (34 medals). Italy and Hungary both won 8 gold medals, but Italy’s overall tally (28 medals) far exceeded Hungary’s (17 medals). Finally, Australia finished tenth with 7 gold medals but amassed 35 medals overall, surpassing both France and South Korea in total medals despite its lower ranking.
