The table illustrates the proportion of adults taking public transport in different cities in Australia between 1996 and 2006. Overall, the population of adults who took public transport in Brisbane had the largest percentage in change in 10 years. By contrast, the percentage of adults taking it in Canberra was the lowest of all.
In the first group, the percentage of adults in Sydney that was the most popular of all, was about 23% in 1996 and increased to 26% in 2006, it fluctuated around 13% in change. Becoming the second and the third after Sydney was Adelaide and Perth, it reached 14% and 13% respectively in 1996. After 10 years, the percentage of adults in both cities was about 17% and 15%. Although it did not increase too much, the percentage in change in both cities was around 21% and 16%.
Furthermore, it was similar in the remaining cities in 1996. The population of adults in Brisbane and Canberra was both about 12%, while the percentage of adults in Brisbane was increased to 16% in 2006, the figures for Canberra decreased to 8% in 2006. Similarly, the population of adults in Melbourne and Hobart both reached 11%, the percentage of adults in Melbourne increased to 12% in 2006 , while the figures in Hobart decreased to 9% in 2006.
