Overall, it is clear that reading was the most popular activity in both areas throughout the period and showed gradual increase. By contrast, animated play and photography were less preferred, although photograph experienced noticeable growth over time.
In detail, reading accounted for 61% of adults in urban areas and 71% in rural areas in 1990. These figures rose steadily over the following two decades, reaching the same proportion by 2010. As for playing in free time, participation in urban areas declined significantly from 21% to 14%, while the figure for rural residents remained unchanged at 26%.
Photography showed an upward trend in both locations. In urban areas, participation increased from 7% to 17%, whereas in rural areas it rose more markedly, from 14% to 24%. Meanwhile, animated play remained relatively stable in urban areas and experienced only a slight decline in urban regions.
