Overall, the participation of leisure activities in five countries showed a constant change over ten years, with Canada showing the highest percentage of the participants, while India consistently had the lowest.
In Canada, 55% of people aged 18-65 chose reading, the highest among the activities. This figure steadily rose by 10% reaching 65% by 2020, the highest percentage among all countries for reading participation over the decade. While in sports, people demonstrated a slight rise, ranging from 40% to 45% during ten years. Compared to the interest of watching TV, the activity was most selected among the activities in Canada, standing at 80% in 2010 and rising to 85% by 2020. Similarly, Australia started at 50% in 2010, and climbed to 60% by 2020 in reading, closely following Canada. Conversely, Australian’s participation grew from 40% to 45% in sports and from 85% to 85% in ten years, slightly higher than Canada and other places’ participations.
Reading interest in France and Italy experienced similar patterns of growth, starting at 40% and 35%, respectively, in 2010 and increasing to 55% and 50%, respectively, by 2020. The percentage of sports participations in France and Italy were similar, ranging from 35% and 30%, respectively, in 2010 and to 40% and 35% by 2020. Notably, France’s 70% in 2010 was equal to Italy’s 70% in 2020. France reached 75% by 2020, while Italy’s 70% participation in 2020 was similar to France’s figure in 2010.
India consistently recorded the lowest participation rates across all activities. In reading and sports, participation rates started at 20% and 25% in 2010 and doubled to 40% by 2020. Meanwhile, watching TV was the most popular activity in India, increasing modestly from 60% to 65% over the decade.
