Overall, football remained by far the most dominant sport, despite its slight decrease, followed distantly by golf, and it mirrored the trend that of football. Notably, the survey shows that Judo was the least preferred by the UK residents.
Starting with the football category, the most favored stood out, accounting for 59% in the first year, after which it fell slightly to 56% by 2010. Additionally, Golf ranked second, constituting 28% in 1990. Over the following two decades, it also showed a marginal downward trend, comprising 26%. Lastly, the percentage of people who were interested in Judo stood at 9%, after which it decreased significantly over the period, representing only 4% in the final year.
A striking contrasting pattern was observed in the remaining type of sports; people interested in rugby saw a two-fold increase, rising from 12% in 1990 to 24% in 2010. Cricket also demonstrated an upward trend, increasing from 12% to 14 over the two decades. Despite some fluctuation, the percentage of individuals interested in swimming witnessed an overall upward trend over the period, accounting for 15%, growing by three percentage points by 2000, then it experienced an insignificant dip to 16% in 2010.
