Overall, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the greatest number of speakers. However, the language that was most used as an additional language is English. Meanwhile, Portuguese has the least number of speakers and the least spoken as an additional language.
According to the chart, Mandarin is spoken by 900 million native speakers. Although a total of 1.090 million people speak Mandarin, only a few uses Mandarin as an additional language, only 190 million. On the other hand, only one-third (339 million) of those speaking Mandarin speak English and have a total of 942 million speakers. However, 603 million are using English as their second language.
Although Hindi and Spanish are spoken by a similar number of native speakers (370 and 350 million), only 70 million people speak Spanish as their additional language, roughly half that of Spanish (120). Regarding Arabic and Portuguese, 203 million and 206 million native speakers correspondingly, speak this language. However, a tiny minority used this as their alternative language, 24 million and 10 million, respectively.
