The table shows the percentage of the languages taken by native English speakers, categorized by genders, studying at the UK Centre for Foreign Language Learning in 2020.
Overall, it can be seen that Mandarin was the most popular language for women, while Arabic was chosen more than the other languages for men. In addition, Italian and Polish were the least interesting languages for males and females.
As previously mentioned, Mandarin was the most attractive language for women with 27%, followed by Spanish with 19%. Despite choosing significantly less than those languages, Arabic, French, German, Polish and Japanese still took around 10%. Moreover, just under 5% of women chose Italian and Welsh to learn.
For men, Spanish and Arabic were the highest choice languages, approximately 20%. Specifically, the percentage of Mandarin and German was the same at 14%. While, the other languages were less chosen, just under 10%.
