The provided table illustrates commonly chosen foreign languages by native English students who are currently attending the UK Center for the Foreign Language Learning in 2020.
Overall, Mandarin language showed highest selection rate for women, while Italian was the lowest. As for the men’s preference, Arabic was the most popular, whilst Polish was the least.
To begin with, women students demonstrated more interest in Mandarin language, accounting for 27%. The second most popular was Spanish, with 19%, followed by Polish, which was 11%. Arabic and French languages displayed the equal percentage of 10%. Meanwhile, intention to learn Japanese, German, Welsh and Italian was considerably lower, showing 9%, 7%, 4% and the lowest 3%.
Regarding men’s proportion, Arabic language was the highest, with 22%. Following this, Spanish illustrated 19% of popularity rate. Mandarin and German with French and Italian were the ones which showed 14% and 5%, similarly. While 10% of male students learnt Japanese, the remaining 8% and 3% studied Welsh and Polish.
