The tables depict statistics about potato consumption and production in five parts of the world in 2006.
By and large, Europe consumed the highest kilograms of potatoes per capita, while Africa had the lowest consumption, and other regions experienced moderate figures. In terms of production, Asia and Europe were leading producers, which stood out from other regions’ quantities.
Regarding consumption, Europe led the table with 96.1 kg per person. This was followed by North America, consuming 57.9 kg of potatoes per person in 2006. Meanwhile, Asia and South and Central America had relatively low consumption with 25.8 and 23.6 kg per capita, respectively. Africa had the lowest potato consumption, each person consumed only 14.1 kg throughout the year.
In terms of production, Asia produced the highest amount of potatoes with 131.2 million tonnes. Europe’s figure was slightly lower than that of Asia, producing 126.3 million tonnes. Noticeably, other regions produced relatively low quantities of potatoes, South and Central American yielded the lowest production with 15.6 million tonnes. Production levels of potato in Africa and North America was slightly higher than that in South and Central America, with 16.4 million tonnes and 24.7 million tonnes in 2006, respectively.
