Overall, the amount of potatoes consumed by people living in Europe and North America was the largest, while that of potatoes eaten by people from Africa ranked the lowest. Also, regarding production, Europe and Asia were the regions with the largest amount.
The amount of potatoes consumed by an average person living in Europe was the highest, reaching 96.1 kg per person in 2006. Followed by the second number in North America, with 57.9 kg per person. In contrast, this type of vegetable was not heavily consumed by individuals in Asia and the regions in South and Central Asia, ranging from 23.6 to 25.8 kg per person while the lowest number was witnessed in the figure for Africa, reaching only under 15kg per person.
While Europe had a significant consumption per person and a staggering production rate, Asia acted more as a major producer of potatoes, with a production of 131.2 million tonnes. While Europe was responsible for 126.3 million tonnes, the amount being produced by North America was more than five times lower, reaching 24.7 million tonnes. Among other final regions, each was responsible for manufacturing only about 15 million tonnes.
