Overall, it’s clear that potato consumption of Europe was the highest among all regions, but Africa showed the lowest proportion. Figures for North America were twice higher than South and Central America and Asia/Oceania. Moving on to potato production, Asia/Oceania and Europe top charted respectively, but other three mainlands much less than them.
Looking at the details, the amount of potato consumption was relatively different for all regions. Europe came the first with 96.1 kg, but Africa was the last one at 14.1 kg. The second place occupied by North America with 57.9 kg per person. Asia/Oceania and South and Central America came next with 25.8 kg and 23.6 kg respectively.
As for potato production, there were two highest and three lowest figures in 2006. The biggest proportion of potato production, 131.2 million tonnes, was made up by Asia and Oceania. Europe’s figure located in the second place with 126.3 million tonnes. Coming to the lowest countries, North America occupied the third place with 24.7 million tonnes, and Africa constituted 16.4 million tonnes of potato production. Finally, the lowest proportion of potato production was in South and Central Asia, with only 15.6 million tonnes.
