The two tables above explore the relationship between potato production and consumption in different regions of the world in 2006. The first table records the amount of potatoes consumed per person in kg in each region while the second table records the quantity in tonnes of potatoes produced per region.
In the first table it is evident that Europe has the highest consumption of potatoes per person with an annual consumption of 96.1 kg. Conversely on the second table Europe ranks second in potato production, merely falling behind Asia/Oceania with a 126.3 million tonnes produced annually. Conversely, Africa has the lowest consumption of potato per person with a measely 14.1kg consumed annually. This is justified as the second table portrays Africa as the second smallest producer of potatoes globally with just 16.4 million tonnes annually.
After evaluating both tables, the data reflects that there is a direct relationship between potato production and consumption in different regions, yet there are other factors that influence consumption. Factors such as dietary habits, tradition, and wealth all also play a significant role in justifting the varying potato consumption in each region.
