The table provides information about the amount of potatoes consumed and produced in several continents in 2006.
Overall, while Europe and Asia yielded the most potatoes, the opposite was true for the remaining regions. Additionally, Europeans and North Americans consumed the largest kilograms of potatoes per person.
Looking first at kilograms of potatoes consumed by people in different regions, Europe’s potato intake was the highest among all continents listed, at 96.1 kilograms per person. In North America, where people used the second-most amount of potatoes, at 57.9 kilograms per individual, North America was significantly followed by South and Central America and Asia. These two regions had comparable consumption figures ( at 23.6 kilograms and 25.8 kilograms per person, respectively). In addition, Africans consumed the least amount of potatoes on the whole chart, at only 14.1 kilograms per person.
Turning next to the potato production of several areas, Asia was the largest producer with 131.2 million tonnes, slightly edging out Europe’s production at 126.3 million tonnes. The remaining regions produced significantly smaller amounts, with North America accounting for 24.7 million tonnes, compared with 16.4 million tonnes in Africa and 15.6 million tonnes in South and Central America.
