Overall, the import figures from both countries witnessed significant fluctuations. Notably, the data on importing from Australia increased throughout the period, whilst those from Japan saw the opposite trend.
New Zealand imported NZ$4000 million from Australia in 1994, which experienced a fluctuation, with around NZ$6500 million in 1996, a sharp drop of NZ$3000 million in 1999, before seeing the largest jump to nearly NZ$7500 million in the mid-2000. This declined steadily to under NZ$5000 million, before soaring dramatically to its peak of NZ$8000 million in 2024.
Turning to imports from Japan, the total import value in 1994 was NZ$3000 million. This peaked in the end-1996 at around NZ$6300 million before fluctuating between 1997 and 2000. In 2001, there was a plummet in imports from Japan to under NZ$3000 million and continue to decrease slightly at only NZ$2000 million in2 2004, the lowest level in any year.
