The two pie charts compare how adults in a certain country spent their leisure time in 2010 and 2020, divided into six activity categories.
Overall, the most noticeable change is the shift in preference from traditional pastimes such as watching TV and reading to more modern activities like social media. While watching TV was the most popular activity in 2010, social media took the lead in 2020.
In 2010, watching TV was the dominant leisure activity, accounting for 35% of total time spent—more than three times the proportion of “other” activities, which stood at just 5%. Reading was the second most popular choice at 20%, twice as common as outdoor hobbies at 10%. Exercise and social media were equally preferred, both making up 15% of leisure time, showing a balanced interest in physical activity and emerging digital trends at the time.
By 2020, social media had risen sharply to 35%, matching the previous share held by watching TV, which dropped by 10 percentage points to 25%. Reading experienced a 50% decline, falling to the same level as “other” activities, both at 10%. Outdoor hobbies also saw a reduction by half, decreasing from 10% to 5%, making it the least chosen activity. In contrast, exercise was the only category that remained unchanged at 15%, indicating stable participation despite changes in other areas.
