The bar chart illustrates the monthly revenue from swimsuit sales in New York City between January and June of 2021, while the line chart complements this information by providing insight into the mean monthly temperature. Units are reported in hundreds of thousands of US dollars and degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.
Overall, we saw a massive surge in bathing suit sales leading up to the summer months, after which it plummeted, as well as increasing temperatures likely driving those changes.
The sales started at around $100,000 in January, followed by a steady $25,000 increase per month for the next two months, while the temperature was measured at around 30 degrees for the first two months and rose by about 8 degrees in March to an average of just under 40 degrees. In April, the money spent by customers almost doubled, reaching $300,000 and recording an all-time high, while the temperature gain remained constant, at 10 degrees per month for the rest of the tracked period, reaching 65 degrees in July.
Surprisingly, leading into the hotter months, the revenue showcased a massive drop of over two-thirds in May to $80,000. This downward trend persisted in June, with monthly sales hitting a historic low of a mere $20,000.
