The two graphs provide insights into the number of English learners in Vietnam over three years from 2015, and why they opted for studying English. The bar chart categorizes the total number of students into four age groups.
Overall, the majority of students who studied English belongs to the 17-24 age brackets, and there was a significant increase in the number of students over the course of three years. Besides, it is notable that studying abroad was the most favourable reason for their learning of English.
Specifically, almost 10 young adults (17-24 years old) chose to learn English in 2015, which was considerably higher than the other age groups. This figure constantly increased until 2018, reaching roughly 40 students and quadrupling the others. Regarding teenagers (13-16 years old), despite the initial number of students was the lowest, it experienced a gradual rise, ranking second in 2018, with approximately 8 students. Meanwhile, the remaining age groups constituted a relatively low number of students throughout the period, ranging from 4-6 students.
With reference to learners’ purposes, in 2015, more than half studied English for studying abroad (58%) whilst around one-tenth studied for immigration and school graduation, occupying 19% and 23% respectively. In 2018, however, less than half studied for studying abroad (43%) and a quarter studied for work opportunities. Moreover, only a small proportions studied English for scholarship and graduation whereas the percentage for immigration remained unchanged.
