Overall, over the period, for types of expenses, Food, Leisure, Transport and Energy witnessed a gradual decrease, nevertheless, there was a significant increase in the amount of money spent on Clothing.
At the beginning of the period, Food predominated and was the major factor in spending money, accounting for nearly 35% in 1960. Despite its initial leading position, it started decreasing over the 40-year period by approximately 15 percentage points. By contrast, money spent on clothes experienced a considerable increase, rising from a mere 9% to almost 17% and showed an upward trend at the end of the period.
Leisure spending started with roughly 20% in 1960 and declined steadily to 12% in 2000. Similarly, Energy also saw a moderate fall and by 2000 accounted for 1% only. Transport held a relatively stable share of around 8% to 10% before dropping constantly to just 3% in 2000.
