The statement implies that advancement of technology and automation have lessened the demand of manual labor, making working hours to decrease. From my point of view, I disagree with this argumentation for two important reasons.
To begin with, the advanced improvement of technology has made lots of businesses to shift, mostly to artificial intelligence or AI, in order to cut their expenditures. As much as it is true and might be beneficial, we cannot forget that these modernized machines still need to be under human’s control. The technology cannot work by themselves, and so employees are needed to utilize them. We cannot let these technologies to work on their own as unexpected errors might occur, and it is not a wise choice to reduce the workers’ working hours while we still need their expertise.
On the other side, decreasing the working hours might create another serious problem, not only for companies, but for the nation’s economy as well. A high unemployment rate might come up as a result of people being fired and having no sufficient job opportunities in the working industry. This could heavily affect a lot of employees and cause much more bigger issues, such as high poverty rate, a limited access to health sector, and so on.
Overall, cutting down human labor and their working hours while replacing them with newest technology will not be an effective nor efficient way for companies as they still need the workers’ skills and knowledge to operate the automated machines. On the other hand, they could potentially create a problem of high unemployment rate that would affect badly for the country’s economy.
