Band 6+: After graduation many students take a year to travel. Some think that it would be more useful to work for a year. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Nowadays, many students tend to take a gap year to explore the world or find a job after finishing high school. In my opinion, it is obvious that this action will have some consequences for teenagers for two reasons below.

First and foremost, taking a year off is likely to trigger a loss of motivation to return to academic pursuits. This is mainly attributed to the fact that they do not need to use the theoretical knowledge in books, so they will forget it in twelve years of study. As a result, when students return to college, they will feel left behind because they have forgotten their knowledge and have rested for too long. For example, according to VietnamWorks, 280 students participated in a survey about the risk of losing knowledge when stopping studying for one year and that also erodes brain sharpness. In short, students need to both study and practice, so these two things cannot be separated, take a gap year can bring concern when you return.

Secondly, travelling during a gap year costs an arm and a leg. Teenagers are not able to pay the all amount of money when they travel, so they can only use the money of parents. Therefore, it is clear that the exorbitant cost will pose a financial burden for their family and more seriously is taking out loans. To illustrate, if you cannot help your parents earn money to cover living expenses and have not participated in the labour market, the possibility of getting your parents’ permission to travel is very low. Through this lens, go on a trip for long periods of time only for those who are financially well off, students should go out and relax after a hard day of studying but only to the extent that is sufficient.

In conclusion, the potential disadvantages of taking a gap year should be carefully considered before deciding to determine if it is the right choice for the student.

Today, most people, including scientists and tourists, have an interest in traveling to inaccessible natural areas, which are more dangerous and difficult, such as the South Pole. Although this may harm a person, it allows them to create new opportunities and experience new things. Despite potential advantages, I believe this is generally disadvantageous. On the […]
