There has been considerable debate regarding whether schools should focus on teaching children practical skills or provide them with a wide range of subjects. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and explain why i believe offering a range of subjects is more beneficial, as it broadens children’s knowledge and helps them discover their interests.
Those who support teaching children practical skills argue that these skills prepare them for real-life situations. This is because children need to develop independence and learn how to manage everyday responsibilities rather than relying entirely on others. For example, teaching financial literacy helps students manage their money effectively, prepare budgets and make informed financial decisions. As a result, teaching practical skills helps children become more independent and equips them to deal with challenges in their daily lives.
On the other hand, proponents of teaching a range of subjects claim that it helps children develop broad knowledge. This is crucial because studying different subjects allows students to discover their interests, identify their strengths and explore various career opportunities. For instance, studying science, mathematics, languages and history helps children gain knowledge in different fields and understand the world around them. Consequently, teaching a range of subjects prepares children for a wider range of future opportunities and helps them make better decisions about their careers.
In conclusion, both sides have valid point. While teaching children practical skills focuses on preparing them for real-life situations, teaching a range of subjects emphasizes broad knowledge and diverse career opportunities. In my opinion, schools should teach a range of subjects, as this helps children discover their interests and prepares them for different career paths.
