In recent years, plastic surgery has become widely popular among people to enhance their appearance over their overall health. Although there are numerous reasons why some choose to use it, I believe it is a negative phenomena due to the fact that it is expensive and dangerous.
There are many rationales behind choosing beautification through surgery. Firstly, many are uncomfortable with the way they look, therefore, it is commonly used to enhance self confidence in individual. For example, many overweight people are unable to lose weight, but such surgeries gives the option to look fitter, thus, promoting better body image. Secondly, a large number of them, more specifically artists who work in fashion and show industry alter their appearance for career progression. Lastly, cosmetic companies tend to advertise their product which give the motivation and courage for people to try it.
Despite a considerable raise in plastic surgeries rates over the past few years, I believe it is a development accompanied with various consequences. One of them is the potential risks of complications such as infections and scarring, which can be life threatening sometimes. Another reason, people are becoming more obsessed about tailoring their image which can lead to mental health problems. For example, many have experienced depression and anxiety disorders due to their obsession with beauty.
To conclude, although the trend towards cosmetic surgery enables individuals to have better body image, I believe it is rather harmful since it puts wide range of potential health risks, the possibility of addiction.
