It is true that, more and more people are making the decision to reside in large cities. While there are a variety of reasons responsible for this, steps can definitely be taken to solve it and also give opinion on whether or not the government should encourage people to live in small town.
On the one hand, migration of people from rural to urban has several reasons. One reason is that with large populations concentrated in urban areas, cities often become overcrowded, leading to high population density and putting pressure on housing, infrastructure, and public services. For example, Nigeria, faces extreme housing challenges. The rapid urbanization has caused to the growth of unofficial communities with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity. Another reason is that urbanization puts a strain on healthcare, education, and other public services. These services may struggle to keep up with the increasing demand, leading to reduced quality of life. For instance, in some parts of Africa, rapidly growing populations have resulted to crowded classrooms with limited access to textbooks and educational materials.
There are several reasons why governments could encourage people to live in smaller towns. To begin with inspiring people to live in small towns can help reduce overcrowding in cities and spread development more evenly across a country. It can also enhance small towns that may be struggling with population decline. In addition, promoting job creation or remote work options, so people are not forced to move to cities in search of employment.
However, the migration of people from rural to urban areas can benefit cities, a dramatic reduction in the number of people in cities would pose significant challenges. Cities are home to a diverse workforce. If people leave, many industries, especially those dependent on skilled or specialized labor, might face worker shortages, affecting their ability to operate effectively.
