Nowadays, an increasing number of people choose to undergo cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance. While this trend is driven by various medical and social reasons, I believe that the growing popularity of cosmetic procedures is a negative development due to the serious health risks and harmful social consequences it brings.
There are several reasons why people decide to change the way they look. Firstly, some people have medical problems. For example, birth defects can cause physical abnormalities that affect a person’s daily life and self-confidence. In addition, cosmetic surgery is sometimes used to repair the face or body after accidents or illnesses. Secondly, social pressure also plays an important role. The media often promotes unrealistic beauty standards such as perfect body shapes, fair skin and attractive facial features. As a result, many people want to look like celebrities or idols they admire. Moreover, appearance is highly valued in some careers like modeling or acting, so surgery is seen as a way to enter or maintain these jobs.
However, I believe this trend brings more disadvantages than benefits. Cosmetic surgery involves serious health risks. Operations can fail and lead to postoperative complications such as swelling, redness or infections, and in extreme cases, they can even cause death. Furthermore, some people become addicted to surgery because they are never satisfied with their appearance, which leads to repeated operations and financial problems. From a social perspective, cosmetic surgery also reinforces unrealistic beauty standards and stereotypes, causing discrimination against those who do not meet these ideals. This can damage self-esteem, as people start to judge themselves based on appearance rather than inner qualities.
In conclusion, although cosmetic surgery can help in some medical cases, its increasing popularity is a negative development because it harms both individuals and society.
