It is true that more and more people from countryside are migrating to urban areas on a global scale, resulting in the decline of rural population. I strongly believe this trend has detrimental effects on society.
To begin with, rural-to-urban migration can lead to overpopulation in cities. This will rise the demand for housing, causing accommodation shortages, and as a result, the house prices will soar. Similarly, unemployment rates are certain to increase as well due to many job-seekers competing in the market. Moreover, traffic congestion and air pollution may aggravate as urban cities become more crowded, and public services, such as healthcare, police and fire brigade are also likely to suffer. Considering everything mentioned above, over-migration to cities may deter people from achieving their initial goal to live a high-quality life with many opportunities.
Furthermore, rural businesses and public services will also face great challenges from this migration trend. Falling population means falling consumer base for businesses, allowing little to no room for profit, ultimately forcing restaurants and stores to move to more thriving areas. Consequently, the rural life becomes more challenging and its dwellers suffer even more from lack of convenient places to purchase their daily needs. On top of that, public services are less likely to be able to provide good quality facilities for locals due to insufficient funds. For example, schools will struggle to retain qualified teachers or offer a diverse range of courses, failing to provide quality education for children. This will lead to an even further educational disparity between countryside and cities.
In conclusion, as the number of people residing in suburbs decreases the consequences are dire for both cities and rural regions.
