Nowadays, it is prevalent that the curriculum in many schools includes not only academic subjects but also creative arts subjects. However, the question of whether art classes are a waste of time or not is highly debated. From my perspective, I strongly disagree that art classes waste students’ time due to their benefits on creativity as well as emotional and cultural developments.
The first rationale given to support my opinion is that art classes can promote the creativity developments of students. Seeing that subjects related to art do not have fixed answers for particular questions like other academic subjects such as math or physics, students can be free to express their creativity without limits. As a result, this not only boosts students’ imagination, but also encourages innovative thinking. Moreover, regularly developing innovative mindsets through art classes helps students have open-mind and flexible perspectives whenever encountering problems, thus improving problem-solving skills.
Another rationale behind my belief is that art classes offer the advantages of emotional and cultural developments. Learning about arts, students are not only allowed to freely express their imagination, but also learn to get insights in other arts works, analysing the underlying meanings and feelings delivered through iconic images. Therefore, students can increase empathy and improve mental health. Nevertheless, learning about the worldwide famous works in art classes can broaden students’ horizons about the different cultures in the world, understanding thoroughly about the artistic and cultural values exhibited in these works.
Admittedly, art classes can be boring and considered as a waste of time for some students not having innate talents or solely focusing on academic performances; however, regarding the benefits on mental developments of students, including art classes in the curriculum is not worthless, but is essential for the overall developments in students.
In conclusion, although there are mixed opinions on determining whether art classes are needed or not in school, I believe that art classes are crucial for students, ensuring the overall developments due to their benefits on students’ creativity as well as mental health.
