Art has a key role in human life; however, some people think that every student has to learn art at school. In this essay, I am going to explain why art classes should not be compulsory at school and state that if this happens, it will have a side effect on students’ efficiency.
Admittedly, learning art classes has a main effect on both creativity and worldview. When students are trying to express their ideas on canvas, for example, they attempt to explain their feelings in several ways, which can improve their mental ability and critical thinking skills. As an example, in Singapore, schools have several games before the lesson starts, including art games, to make students active. These kinds of skills, which enhance the outlook and criticality of students, are very crucial in modern workplaces because, in today’s world, artificial intelligence is becoming more common than ever thought, and they need workers who have innovative thinking and problem-solving qualities that artificial intelligence is unlikely to possess. That is why thinking creatively, which can be chosen over artificial intelligence, is more essential in workplaces. Although, I would say that making art lessons mandatory can have side effects on their effectiveness. Students who are going to have a job that is not related to art are remotely benefited from it, and it will cause students to lose focus and teachers to waste effort. A more effective way which can be a great deal for both sides is that instead of introducing art classes as compulsory for all classes, making them mandatory for elementary classes would be a good approach because when they are young, this subject can have a main effect on their mental agility and innovative thinking. Later on, they should be free to choose their subjects for their own future. Another necessary reason why introducing art classes as compulsory is a waste of time and effort is that in the real world, their place is even smaller than the place of one grain of rice.
Nevertheless, art classes can be vital for students’ imagination, but they cannot replace the knowledge most workplaces require in this developing world. For instance, if students have a perfect idea, but they cannot create it into a real one, this equals zero. Rather than spending time on art, it would be better to spend it on STEM subjects, which can have a main effect on students’ technical ability over creativity itself.
Taking everything into account, it is evident that, however, art classes are perfect to make students more creative, there are some aspects such as students’ career choices or their interests, that’s why schools need to think before making it mandatory. Looking at these points, I believe that art classes should be optional for students in high school.
