Working space is an essential part of office space and the design is important to support employees during their work. Even though in the modern era, companies prefer open-space working space over the separate room due to its efficiency, I think that open-space rooms also have several drawbacks.
First and foremost, it is not effective for certain divisions in the company that require high focus and special tools to support their work. IT staff need their own space to do their work as it requires a lot of focus for software engineers to maintain the company website and fix the bugs on the website, sometimes they also need various IT equipment or the people in human resources who usually dealing with credential documents. Some people would argue that company supposed to provide different rooms for each divisions in order to make the work more efficient. In addition, staff well-being should also be taken into consideration. If the staff feel comfortable in the work place, they would perform better in their jobs. Many people would prefer to have a personal room for each division because they will become more comfortable in collaborating and have discussion with their colleagues rather than being in a big crowded room and have to mingle with peers with different jobdesk.
Regardless of the disadvantages of open-space design, it is obviously true that open-space room provide several huge benefits for the institutions and the staff. One of the advantages is it allow people to connect with each other. Many employees usually try to build networking in their work place which means that if they work in the same space, it would be easier for company staff to have a discussion and share ideas within different groups. With that being said, one room for all design will also benefit the company because the staff could collaborate with each other to make the work more efficient. Additionally, it can reduce the company spending on building maintanance. The company just need to focus on making the room comfortable and fit the staff needs, therefore the rest of the money can be allocated for other needs such as investments.
In conclusion, open-space room design has both advantages and disadvantages. It depends on the company scale and culture, if the business have enough funding to provide spacious rooms for the staff and wants their staff to work efficiently in groups then open space design is not the appropriate one and it goes the other way around.
