There is an opinion, that a number of crimes is growing, and existing prisons are not enough for all criminals. Therefore, society need to build more prisons for solving this problem. I don’t agree with this statement and I strongly believe, that only preventing measures could help to reduce illegal actions.
Every day news about crimes surrounds us thought the Internet and media. Due to social networks and accessibility of information, amount of terrifying posts and videos is really huge. This fact could form the illusion, that illegal activity is rising. But as a journalist, I can’t agree with this opinion, because every day I receive polices pressreleases and research statistic data. Meanwhile a number of online frauds is really growing, cases of murders, kidnapping, burglaries has reduced by 18 – 30 % for the last 10 years. Consequently, a problem of prisons overcrowding doesn’t exist.
However, struggling with criminality is an essential duty of every government. And in this issue, imprisonment is an important, but not the only measure. Preventing of crimes is necessary too. For instance, information people about their administrative and criminal responsibility. Also, monitoring of so called “hard teenagers” and educational programs for them. Besides, work with families with low social level is required, because children from them tend to be engaged in criminal activities as in easiest way of making money.
As a conclusion I can notice, that punishment is an important way for reducing criminality. But the main goal of modern society is to grow new generations with high level of consciousness and responsibility. And may be one day we will become a world without prisons.
