Band 6+: Universities should prioritise teaching practical skills over theoretical knowledge. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There has been heated debate about whether university students should place a greater value on practical skills than academic knowledge to be well-prapared for employment. While i believe hands-on skill sets are necessary in the job market, the theoretical knowledge should not be ignored as it offers adaptability for employees.

Admittedly, the concentration on practical skills pave the way for students’ employment. By engaging in hands-on activities that allows them to develop better skill sets, students are able to develop their technical expertise and practical experience better. For instance, through simulated business cases, real-world projects, a supply chain student can learn how to evaluate suppliers, manage warehouse operations, which is a valuable skill set in job market. As a result, these abilities allows them to gain a head start in the job market. From business’ perspectives, graduates with practical experience may be attractive candidates for employers. As they require less initial training time for work tasks, companies can save time and effort spent on those employees. Therefore, employers often prefer candidates with hands-on skill sets over otherwise equally qualified candidates who lack practical experience.

Nevertheless, focusing on practical experience alone is insufficient, but requires collaborative approach with theoretical knowledge, Firstly, academic knowledge place a basic foundation in any major. Without the understanding of basic knowledge within the major, students can struggle to adapt to a new requirement whenever procedures change. In addition, theoretical knowledge offers students with a lot of soft skills that invaluable in fast-paced job market. Through analysing questions, examining evidence and debating against the other classmates, students can develop a valuable skill sets such as critical thinking, problem solving skills. These skills allows to adapt flexibly in the volatile job market where a procedure and some kinds of skill sets and may be obsolete overnight, leaving workers become vulnerable than ever before. This explains why learning theoretical knowledge should not be overlooked.

In conclusion, while practical experience is crucial for students’ employability, academic knowledge is required to become versatile in the job markets.
