With globalization, population growth has led to increased food demand, and this issue has been rising at an alarming rate. This is mainly caused by population growth, economic development, and changing dietary habits. In this essay, I will discuss the causes of this issue and give some measures to make sure the supply of food is enough.
On the one hand, the main causes of the increasing demand for food are rapid population growth and economic development. The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, which leads to an increase in food demand. As some countries develop, more people move to big cities to live, and they also can afford more diverse diets, including meat and dairy. This disrupts the balance between food supply and consumption. For example, in Vietnam, more young people tend to live in big cities like Ho Chi Minh city, Da Nang city for better job opportunities, higher salaries, and modern lifestyles. As a result, in some rural areas only old farmers work in the farm, and they do not have enough strength to meet the food consumption needs of the people living in big cities. Furthermore, climate change and environmental issues significantly affects food production, such as through droughts, floods or extreme weather.
To solve this issue, the international community must take several measures to ensure a stable food supply. Firstly, the international community can encourage farmers to use AI, drones to improve crop yields with minimal resources. In some urban areas, they can grow crops by using hydroponics. For instance, in Singapore, a vertical hydroponic farm has been created to grow fresh vegetables in a space-efficient manner, by using nutrients from water instead of soil. Secondly, they can develop drought-resistant and genetically modified crops. For example, people in Africa are investing in drought-resistant maize to combat food shortages. Finally, the community can improve storage and transportation to prevent spoilage, and encourage responsible consumption by citizens to reduce the waste of food.
In conclusion, the rising demand for food is caused by population growth, urbanization, economic development, and environmental issues. However, by adopting sustainable agricultural practices and reducing food waste, the international community can ensure food security for future generations.
