Band 7+: Desrcribe the Cause, effect and solution of environmental pollution

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The causes of environmental pollution are, for example, carbon monoxide a poisonous gas from car exhaust and burning fuels; sulfur dioxide, a gas from power plants that causes acid rain; nitrogen oxides, gases from vehicles that create smog; and a very dangerous one, microplastics, because they can go anywhere everywhere, even into our food chain, which is very dangerous because we could get illnesses, diseases,or even death from them entering our food chain. They can cause us a lot of harm.

The effects and solutions are to install interlocked ventilation systems that automatically trigger exhaust fans when gas appliances turn on, or switch power plants and cargo ships from heavy fuel oil to ultra-low sulfur diesel.Power plants use selective catalytic reduction, injecting liquid ammonia into exhaust to break down gases.Governments pass laws forcing clothing brands to fund plastic cleanup and take back old synthetic garmentsfor all the problems that might happen.

Industrial activities release dangerous quantities of sulfur dioxide nitrogen oxides and microplastics that cause widespread disruption to natural ecosystems. When factories burn fossil fuels, they pump sulfur and nitrogen gases into the atmosphere, where the compounds mix with water vapor to create devastating acid rain. This precipitation strips vital nutrients from forest soils, stunts plant growth, and alters the pH levels of freshwater lakes, making them uninhabitable for aquatic life. Simultaneously, nitrogen oxides cause nutrient overloading in waterways, triggering massive algae blooms that suffocate marine habitats. On land and in the sea, millions of tons of synthetic microplastics accumulate in food chains, where animals mistake the toxic debris for food. To protect these vulnerable environments, governments must enforce strict industrial emission caps and fund advanced wastewater filtration systems that trap pollutants before they escape into the wild.

While gaseous emissions destroy ecosystems from the air, synthetic microplastics present a catastrophic, physical threat to global marine and terrestrial environments. These microscopic plastic fragments enter water systems through residential laundry runoff and the breakdown of mismanaged commercial waste. Because plastic does not biodegrade, it accumulates rapidly in ocean gyres, creating massive ecological hazards like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Marine organisms – ranging from microscopic zooplankton to apex predators – ingest these particles, mistaking them for natural food sources. This ingestion causes severe internal blockages, starvation, and the bioaccumulation of toxic chemical additives up the food chain. To mitigate this pervasive crisis, global industries must pivot toward biodegradable bioplastics made from organic matter, while municipal wastewater facilities deploy advanced membrane bioreactors to filter out synthetic fibers before they reach the ocean.

Ultimately, the preservation of the global environment depends on aggressively combating the distinct threats posed by gaseous emissions and microplastic accumulation. While sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides trigger acid rain and decimate forest and aquatic ecosystems from above, microplastics choke marine habitats and contaminate food webs from below. Solving this dual crisis requires a unified approach that combines strict industrial regulations, advanced wastewater filtration, and a rapid transition to renewable energy and biodegradable materials. By addressing these pollutants at their source, humanity can halt widespread ecological degradation and ensure the long-term health of the planet’s diverse ecosystems.
