Band 6+: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Reading fiction (such as novels and short stories) is more enjoyable than watching movies. Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Reading books and watching movies are two of many different activities people do when they have free time. Some people believe that reading stories brings more enjoyment than seeing the movies. Personally, I partially agree with this statement.

On one hand, many individuals prefer to watch the movies because the content that is given to them is richer than those in books. In movies, the story is told by moving screens from the actors, supported by background music and sound effects. Some people find it difficult to understand the story when they have to use their imagination most of the time. In movies, only a small amount of creativity is needed due to the wonderful work of the production team in creating those scenes. Moreover, watching movies can be done as a group activity. Those who wants to relax and spend time with their loved ones can watch the movies together.

On the other hand, a certain amount of the population prefers to read the stories instead of watching them because books are easier to carry around. Those who spend long periods of time on the move from one place to another tend to get bored quite easily. For example, passengers in a plane are not allowed to use their mobile devices for fear of disrupting the normal operation of the aircraft or cause interference in the pilot’s headsets. Therefore, most individuals use books to pass the time. Furthermore, reading books is not a group activity and can be done quietly, therefore, other passengers should not be bothered by this action.

In conclusion, everyone has their own opinion when it comes to entertainment. Some prefer the peace that comes with books, while others prefer the action in movies.
