Recently, people are heavily interested in enhancing their appearances. Some experts say that one has to be cautious about focusing on beauty care excessively as it can be harmful to people’s mental and physical health. In this essay, I will discuss the reason behind this phenomenon and effects.
It is widely known that the media has created the standard of beauty. Not only women but also men are heavily affected by this. For example, ever since the Kpop boy group BTS gained their fame, the total beauty products consumption of men in 2025 was drastically increased than the last year. It clearly shows that men are also impacted by the beauty standard created by the media. Women, who have been the main consumers, are following the beauty trends as well. According to the research conducted by the Korean National University, the way they wear makeup has changed, keeping up with the recent K drama styling trends. It clearly shows that the media has a magnificent impact on both women and men.
However, some people argue that spending excessive money on beauty care could be dangerous. This is because it makes people value appearances rather than their personalities. Furthermore, the beauty industry is deeply rooted in people’s low self-esteem, it only makes people pursue the perfect face that can not be reached in real life. For instance, there has been a trend called ‘Looksmaxing’. These ‘Looksmaxers’ injected a minor amount of meth on their face and lightly punched it with a hammer to have a chiseled jawline. As this shows, extreme focus on beauty only causes harm to people.
To summarize, investing too much time and money on appearances is a serious problem. It is evident that much has to be done to fix it. If people who consume the media and follow the trends criticize what advertising and TV series are promoting, this problem will soon be that of the past.
