It is widely assumed that the effort to save endangered species such as tigers or blue whales is money-consuming. This essay will argue against such an assumption due to the adverse consequences brought by a species’ extinction to other animals and the benefits of preservation to the economy.
Admittedly, one might argue that extinction has no impacts on our society. This is unsound because once a group of animals become extinct, such an extinction would inevitably disrupt biodiversity in the areas. For example, when tigers die out, there will be a lack of predators in the natural habitats, allowing prey animals like gazelles which are also herbivorous to increase their population. Consequently, these regions cannot have any space left for animals to settle because of overgrazing, particularly having a detrimental effect on those which rely on dense terrain including snakes. In the long run, some other species will fail to adapt, thereby triggering mass extinction, and leading to food insecurity as well as the insufficiency in raw materials for production.
Furthermore, biodiversity offers mankind a range of benefits, whether to encourage economic progress or to promote mental well-being. First, saving endangered species enables humans to protect natural habitats from being devastated by human activities, maintaining a variety of spectacular landscapes. Therefore, this protection can boost ecotourism, or safari trips, which will generate more employment opportunities, yield higher income, improve living standards, and ultimately foster economic growth. Additionally, the opportunity to interact with diverse species allows people to stay connected or closer to nature, while isolating themselves from their busy working life. Thus, such interaction could significantly improve our mental health.
In conclusion, I contend that saving endangered species from becoming extinct plays a vital role in today’s world. This is because such a protection can maintain biodiversity, boost economic progress, and enhance humans’ mental well-being.
