Band 6+: Do you think that modern technology, such as the internet and computers will ever replace the book or the written word as the main source of information?

With the rapid development of technology, many advanced technologies have been created for people’s needs. However, some people believed that printed books and written accounts of data are the best source of information, while others believed that ebooks and digital reading devices can be supplanted. From my perspective, I agree with the second opinion due to the rising dominance of digital devices such as the internet or computers.

On the one hand, books are superior to e-books as regards the credibility of information. According to the report of the Vietnam ministry of technology and information, electronic resources of information can be undorthodox with about 10,000 cases of cyberattacks occurring annually, leading to the alteration or deletion of critical personal data. In contrast, printed books undergo rigorous editing, fact-checking, and peer review before publication, ensuring a higher level of reliability. Furthermore, the pleasurable sensory experiences of a stack of books is unparalleled by the internet and computers. Many readers find comfort in the tangible nature of books, which fosters deeper engagement and a stronger emotional connection to the content.

On the other hand, the use of computers and the internet has become prevalent. With the advancement of modern technology, information is easier to access on the internet. It takes less time and is convenient, making the internet a highly convenient and time-efficient source of knowledge. There are many sources of knowledge that are authentic and detailed. Additionally, people nowadays usually stay updated with the latest news on their smartphones or in the electronic resources of information. Unlike books, which requires time to be published and distributed, online information is constantly updated. Modern technology is slowly dominating and supersede books and written words.

In conclusion, while printed books offer credibility and a unique reading experience, digital platforms provide greater accessibility, convenience, and real-time updates. As technology continues to advance, digital reading materials will likely dominate the way people acquire knowledge. Therefore, despite the enduring value of printed books, I believe that modern technology will eventually supersede them in the future.
