Nowadays, eating too much sugar is a serious health problem. A lot of people think that governments must control sugar consumption, but others argue that it is each person’s own responsibility.
On the first hand, people who support government’s control say that authorities must protect public health. Many consumers do not realize how much sugar is in their food and drinks, especially in products from supermarkets. On the contrary, governments can influence this by increasing taxes on sugar and all products with it and banning unhealthy advertising. For example, people started buying less sugary drinks after a tax was introduced on these products in Canada. In this case, the government uses laws to control the sale of unhealthy products.
On the other hand, some people argue that each person should make his or her own choices about what he or she eats. People must decide their own diets, and too many restrictions may limit their freedom. Instead of strict laws, it is better to enhance the education where we can acknowledge the dangers of sugar. This could help people stay healthy. For example, a lot of Russians prefer to eat sugar-free products because they want to reduce the risks for their health. Personal responsibility is important because no one can force a person to eat healthy – they must want to change themselves.
In my opinion, both points of view are necessary. Officials should take some steps, such as increasing taxes on sugar and banning unhealthy advertising, but ones must also take responsibility for their own eating habits.
In conclusion, while the government can help by regulating sugar in food, people must also try to eat less sugar. A combination of both solutions is the most effective way to improve public health.
