Every single year, a significant amount of food is thrown away all over the planet. While this can be attributed to a number of factors, the situation can be improved in various ways.
One of the major reasons for this issue is impulse purchasing. Many people tend to buy way more than they consume, mostly when supermarkets offer discounts. As a result, products expire before they can be used and wasted. Moreover, huge waste is also seen in hotels and restaurants through taking large portion of meal more than necessary which leads to leftovers. After which the food is thrown away as anyone would eat something that has already touched by someone else.
Food waste can be curbed by progressive changes. One effective solution is encouraging individuals to create lists of products they really need before shopping. People have to buy things by looking at the product, how long it maintains its freshness after which indicates how many times a week they should buy groceries. Typically, fresh products retain their quality from 3 up to 5 days. Another viable solution is authorities should also be responsible for hotels and restaurants by setting up certain limitations to huge portions of food. Alternatively, donating leftovers to homeless people or delivering to orphanages.
In conclusion, the main reasons behind the problem are excessive consumption habits and not knowing serving limitations. However, once shopping lists is supervised and a person’s portion requirements are determined, the problem can be addressed successfully.
