Recent trends have shown that many people prefer to move abroad due to various reasons. Despite disadvantages such as loss of culture for the individual and society, I believe that moving to other countries has a net positive effect because humans get to experience new cultures, which not only builds their character, but also builds global cohesion.
First and foremost, citizens who move abroad experience a loss of tradition at a personal level, which is transmitted to the community. Crucial cultural identifiers, such as food and mode of dressing, are difficult to come by in foreign lands; furthermore, the foreigners do not observe or celebrate their unique holidays because these events may not be as popular in foreign countries. This is a case that has been reported by numerous international students, who feel that they cannot observe their customs when living abroad. Such incidences may be isolated, but they affect the community that these students come from because the loss of identity may spread rapidly.
However, this does not mean that there are no upsides to migration, such as cultural exchange for the individuals and global integration for the society. Most people grow up in close-knit communities that may expose them to a narrow way of thinking. Moving abroad exposes them to rich customs and practices from other regions that broaden their minds and make them more acceptable of other practices. As a result, it enhances cohesiveness between countries because they understand each other’s way of life and they may become more accepting. This unity is portrayed in countries with open migration policies such as the United States, the UK, and Australia, where many ethnicities and racial backgrounds are represented.
In conclusion, despite the downsides associated with migration, including a loss of culture, the merits carry more weight because they foster global unity and provide a platform where different practices are spread across the globe.
