Band 7+: Farmers within a country are often protected by tariffs-that is, special taxes on imported food. Such policies are necessary, and should be implemented whenever possible. To what extent do you agree with this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Farmers around the world benefit from the protection provided by tariffs, special taxes imposed on imported food products. There is a widespread belief that such protective measures should be implemented whenever possible. I strongly support this notion as it not only ensures the survival of farmers but also helps prevent potential conflicts between the agricultural sector and the government.

The implementation of tariffs plays a crucial role in providing financial support to farmers, who often struggle to earn a sustainable income. For example, a 2013 study conducted by HEC University in Paris revealed that over 70% of farmers face financial difficulties due to insufficient earnings. About 80% of them recognized the positive impact of tariffs in helping them maintain their livelihood.

The necessity of imposing tariffs lies in maintaining harmony within the agricultural community, thereby averting potential uprisings or protests among farmers. By granting these special allowances, authorities offer farmers a platform to express their concerns without fear of reprisals. For instance, in January 2024, European governments faced protests from disgruntled farmers demanding higher wages. After negotiations, a 55% increase in tariffs was agreed upon, effectively resolving the conflict. This situation highlights the significance of tariffs in pacifying tensions and protecting the interests of millions engaged in farming.

In conclusion, I strongly advocate for the widespread adoption of tariffs to ensure the well-being of farmers and to mitigate discord within the agricultural sector. Implementing such protective measures not only enables those in the farming industry to lead dignified lives but also helps prevent potential conflicts arising from financial disparities.
