Positive And Negative

Band 6+: fewer students are studying science at school and university, favouring more computer based subjects instead. Is this a positive or negative development? What are the reasons for this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With technological advancements on the rise, the need for students to study more computer-based subjects increases, while science becomes the less favored option. Overall, this change introduces more long-term benefits for students, and is mainly brought about by the changing trends in human inventions and discoveries.

Most offices nowadays are furnished with high-tech computers, making it easy to compartmentalize files and documents in one device. To ready students for this working environment, they are already expected to take IT classes from as early as secondary school, and pursuing advanced education in this field also improves resumes for job applications. With the foundational knowledge in computer-based subjects students developed when they were young, the task of learning becomes more manageable. Furthemore, in contrast to computers’ automated and predictable responses, it can be overwhelming to study science, a field of study requiring more practical research. Students may have difficulty coping with the amount of theoretical and practical knowledge they are expected to learn by heart, hindering their overall process.

As for the reasons behind this change, we know that technology specialists work tirelessly to develop machines to aid our daily lives, and they are already so integral in them – under the forms of phones, laptops, tablets, etc. Because of this trend, other hands-on subjects become obsolete in comparison to the study of these machineries. This explains why students choose to pursue computer-based subjects in university, as it is more contemporary and stable. Additionally, since the youth grew up with and is consequently familiar with technology, this further eases the load of studying off their shoulders when they advance to higher levels.

In conclusion, computer-based subjects becoming a more popular field of study than science is a positive change. It reflects the commonness of these devices in our daily lives, the root cause to this development in modern times.
